I like to see first time marathon runners be comfortable with running at least 4 miles before they begin any marathon training schedule.
If you're not there yet, it's okay! Focus on building that running base and come back in a few weeks time. You will be so thankful you did and the training process will be much easier for you!
There are 4 total running days schedule on the marathon training plans that are included inside this training program. 3 of the days are shorter running days and the 4rth day is a scheduled long run day.
You also have the option to add in recovery runs as you would like if you want to run more!
Cross training is optional inside this program and I give you all the details as to why that is inside!
You have the option to include a cross training workout once a week or to use that day as an extra rest day.
I give you tons of cross training options + strength training workouts that are beneficial to runners if you do choose to incorporate cross training.
Since this training plan is specifically designed for first time marathon runners the focus is almost completely on the long run and does not include other quality running workouts such as tempo runs or hill repeats.
The focus of all 3 of the marathon training plans included in this program are on building endurance! Building endurance and consistency are the keys to your success!
Many beginner marathon training plans are overwhelming with the amount of mileage and fancy workouts scheduled which can not only lead to injury but burn out in first time marathoners.
However, in my experience in training hundreds of marathoners, I have found that taking a simpler approach is the absolute best path for a first time marathon runner.
That is why I created these training plans to help you not feel overwhelmed by high mileage weeks and challenging runs. These workouts have their place but they are not a necessity in a recreational marathon runner's training.
Therefore, as mentioned previously, you will simply have 3 scheduled shorter runs and one longer run each week.
Absolutely! I give you ideas as to how to make modifications as well.
Yes! I give you 3 first time marathon training plans to choose from inside this program however, if you already have your perfect marathon training plan you can still absolutely go through the program and have access to all of the other resources for first time marathoners!
Absolutely not! It makes me sad that so many runners never try the marathon distance as so many "beginner" marathon training plans overcomplicate the entire training process.
Truly all a recreational beginner marathon runner needs is to focus on building their long run distance and do a couple of shorter base runs during the week (even just 3-4 mile runs).
Save the fancy workouts and high mileage weeks for future marathons when you have learned more about yourself and how you respond to the marathon. There is no need for marathon training to be stressful when in fact it can be simplified to just getting out there and running a couple of times a week and including a longer run each weekend.
You can run a marathon building up to 40 miles per week at the height of your training and in 16 to 20 weeks time and you can start by just running about 15-20 miles each week!
Reduction weeks (where you will take a short break from increasing your long run distance and weekly mileage) are built into each of the 3 marathon training plans inside the Run Your First Marathon Program.
These reduction weeks will help you to stay focused, give you extra time to rest and recover from previous weeks and long runs while keeping your body adapted to long distance running and most importantly reduce your chances of injury!
